On January 6th, 2024, Prof. Amr El Mougy approached his student Mohamed Sharaf to propose an exclusive cyber range for the American University in Cairo. They discussed the concept and its potential impact, ultimately agreeing to embark on the project.
Sharaf began developing the terminal-based version, named CyberRange V0.1. Recognizing the project’s potential, Prof. El Mougy envisioned a more accessible, web-based version to inspire students to explore and enjoy cybersecurity.
Around March 18, 2024, Mohamed Farrag reached out to his former professor, El Mougy, seeking an internship to fulfill his graduation requirements. After several email exchanges and one meeting, Farrag officially joined the team. On April 1, 2024, he and Sharaf began work on CyberRange V1.0.
Over the next four months, the team worked tirelessly in the cyberrange lab at AUC, fueled by determination and pizza. By the end of summer 2024, the web-based cyber range was ready for launch and tested during the Spring 2023/2024 semester. Students enthusiastically participated in Capture the Flag (CTF) challenges, providing overwhelmingly positive feedback.
We’d also like to give a special shoutout to the coolest Dean Sherif Aly for making the CyberRange lab a reality and for his continuous support.🫡
Under Prof. El Mougy’s guidance, the cyber range officially launched in the Fall 2024/2025 semester, marking a significant milestone in cybersecurity education at AUC. The rest, as they say, is history. 😉
We'd like to thank everyone who played a vital role in making this project a success.
